Angela Popplewell: Empowering Youth Through Photography

The December Stories are a series of first-hand accounts of the ONA community’s work on important causes and issues around the world. In 2017, we partnered with our longtime friends at 100cameras to more than double the scale of their storytelling educational programs around the world.  Today, 100cameras co-founder Angela Popplewell shares an update on the past year and announces the 2018 ONA x 100cameras Snapshot Projects. I am overjoyed and expectant for all that is ahead for 100cameras in 2018! We have recently launched our Snapshot Project platform as an avenue to serve more kids worldwide with each new year. By packaging up our model, curriculum and tools, and the lessons we have learned from the field for close to a decade to now, we are planning to work with 20 new communities next year alone through equipping passionate creatives to empower kids and communities around the world that are close to their hearts.

With ONA's incredible support, we are delighted and proud to announce 8 new Snapshot Projects that will be implemented in 2018 with even more projects soon ready to announce in the new year:

  • Beirut, Lebanon in partnership with the Jusoor School; led by Nour Coudsi

  • Hoi An, Vietnam in partnership with Bright Futures For Kids; led by Kelly Johnson

  • Caracas, Venezuela in partnership with Espacio Anna Frank; led by Elizabeth Schummer

  • KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in partnership with Midlands Meander Education Project; led by Leslé Hall

  • Teknaf, Bangladesh in partnership with Amara Korbo Joy; led by Sumaiya Haque

  • Omaha, Nebraska USA in partnership with The Central High School Thrive Club; led by Brittany Steigner

  • Canaan, Haiti in partnership with The Center for the Arts and Destiny Ministries; led by Alicia Diamond

  • Q'ero, Peru in partnership with Willka Yachay; led by Katie Hebson

It is quickly becoming a favorite highlight of my work to connect with leaders across four continents who will be spearheading Snapshot Projects across our world. From a seventeen year old leading some of her high school photography club members to travel and work with Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh to a retired local doctor utilizing her love of photography to give kids a platform to process their stories in the midst of a confusing time in Venezuela to a Mom and her two teenage girls that just completed a trek to reach the Q'eros tribe in the mountains of Peru, I am convinced each Snapshot Project leader represents the most incredible threads that are found in humanity across our great earth. These examples represent just a few of our inspiring leaders and their stories, and we are excited to be introducing each to you over the next few weeks.

On behalf of ONA Bags and 100cameras, we invite you to be encouraged with us as we follow along their journeys to empower kids they care about to process and tell their stories through photography in a way that impacts how they view themselves and their roles in their communities. As each project is completed, the students' images will be for sale at 100cameras.org, and 100% of the proceeds will fund the most pressing needs in their communities, enabling them to see the impact of their contribution.

When you purchase a product with ONA Bags, you are supporting the Storytelling Fund which will help directly further our mission through these Snapshot Projects, and we are truly thankful for your involvement and support!

Learn more at 100cameras.org, and view/purchase the students’ photos in their online shop. Help share the story of 100cameras and the students’ perspectives by following on InstagramFacebook, and Twitter
