Where ONA Goes: Okinawa with Christina Emilie Shields

Meet Christina Emilie Shields, a fashion and lifestyle photographer based in New York City. She is not only a fantastic Instagrammer (in fact, that's how we first got to know her), but also counts brands like ModCloth, The Style Line, and Etsy among her clients.

Recently, we found out that Christina and her husband were about to visit Okinawa, Japan, where her sister-in-law's family had recently moved. Having never been there ourselves, we thought we'd ask Christina to document her trip, which covered locales as diverse as the Shurijo Castle and Tadake Falls. Join us today for a colorful Okinawan journey through Christina's lens.

Christina Shields: We visited two castles, the Nakagusuku and Shurijo, that represent ancient Okinawa of Ryukyu Kingdom. There were endless cafes with tradional Okinawan cuisine. My favorite spots to relax with a latte and my cameras were Soupçon and Cafe Doka Doka.  Handmade pottery is also very popular and seen throughout shops and cafes.

Another day we hiked through the jungle to find one of the many waterfalls on the island, Tadake Falls. The trail to the falls is a river. Luckily I had my Bowery bag and Lima strap with me, so the adventure could continue. We climbed the trail that took us to the top of the falls.

One of the highlights for me were the white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. We snorkeled in the East China Sea and collected seaglass from one of the eastern beaches in the town of Henoko, Nago.
